A costing toolkit for WASH services in healthcare facilities (HCF) and schools was co-developed by the Swiss Water and Sanitation Consortium and the Water institute of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). The results of the preliminary study of eight healthcare facilities in Nepal in 2022 was published in the journal Global Health: Science and Practice in June 2024.
The costing toolkit aims to support school and HCF stakeholders to determine, in a straightforward way, the financial resources needed to achieve and sustain WASH services. Determining such costing data for WASH services in institutions supports advocacy efforts and policy implementation.
The costing toolkit consists of the following documents:
Excel-based worksheet
The Excel-based worksheet is used for data entry and automatically performs key calculations.
User guide
The user guide explains each tab of the worksheet in detail and answers frequently asked questions.
When completed in full, the toolkit produces lifecycle cost estimates that cover the entire lifespan of WASH services, including installation, operation and maintenance, trainings, decommissioning and disposal.
The costing toolkit is available for HCFs and schools, in English and French and can be downloaded below. When using the toolkit, please acknowledge UNC and SWSC as indicated on the last page of the guide and contact us in case of questions (info@waterconsortium.ch).
