The Integrity Management toolbox for small water supply systems is a management and governance training package for community groups managing a small water supply system. Its overall goal is to improve water services delivery in marginalized areas, by ensuring that small water supply systems have appropriate management models in place that guarantee quality of services delivery and sustainable water resources management in line with the national standards and the country’s rules and regulations.
Developed in Kenya since 2014 by Caritas Switzerland, the Water Integrity Network and the WASREB (Water Services Regulatory Board), the approach has been presented in different fora to teams of the Consortium. As part of the SDC funded programme called the Multi Country Water Integrity Programme (MCWIP), funds were allocated to pilot the IM toolbox in Ethiopia, starting from May 2017, building on the exiting network from the Consortium.
The IM toolbox engages community groups in a long-term and participatory process that builds their capacity and links them with the county government and other institutions of the sector, so that they can:
- Take an informed decision on what management model is most appropriate for ‘their’ water system and ensure they have the required legal status for that (compliance);
- Improve the way they perform the tasks that they will continue to handle ie: improving transparency of processes and increasing accountability towards the users and the oversight institutions.
