In Benin, the WATA technology is introduced in 5 health centres and allows the local production of chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) for water treatment and disinfection purposes. The staff was trained and the health centres equipped with the WATA kit. After few weeks of in-house production, the distribution of produced chlorine to the surrounding health centres was initiated.
The WATA kit is a simple tool to produce chlorine; it requires water, salt and electricity. According to the project team, it is a cost-effective alternative to l’eau de javel and has already been widely promoted among several health centres.
