For the strategic start of establishing workplaces having basic facilities that the women require during the menstruation, one organization's project office in Nepal has initiated the 'Menstrual hygiene friendly workplace' initiative. A workplace that wants to call himself a menstrual hygiene friendly workplace needs following provisions:
- Separate toilet for female staff
- Menstrual waste disposal facilities in toilets
- Availability of sanitary pad for emergency use
- Basic supplies (basic medicines, hot water bags, etc.) for the complication during menstruation
- Rest room for female staffs during menstrual cramps and complication
- Days off without pre-approval during menstrual complication
This information was shared with the project implementing partner organizations at district level and other relavent stakeholders. All implementing partner organizations have already set up these provisions in their project offices. Some of the I/N/GOs i.e Drinking water supply and sanitation office Dolpa, District Health Office, RRN Dolpa, KIRDARC Dolpa, SNV Dolpa have also initiated to establish these provisions.
Initiating inititiaves in the own organization adds on the awareness building which is also worked on at regional and national level. For more information see the success story on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) advocacy in Nepal.
